From Kitten to Cat.

What a difference a year makes! It doesn’t seem possible that the wonderful young cat who now shares our life here at Fantasy Farm was once a tiny scared kitten, his transformation has been a joy to see. When we came back off of a short break and decided to sit outside on the patio that September evening last year, we were really surprised to see a tiny black and white kitten crawl out from a crack under a window further down the building, and peer hesitatingly at us.   From the other cats distainful behaviour it was obvious that …

Halloween

As you know, Fantasy Farm is all about the animals who live here. We do however notice what the humans do, and the strange things they celebrate… Domino has just discovered an enormous orange pumpkin on the vegetable patch and is sniffing it. “What is it?” He asks me. “It’s a pumpkin,” I explain. “What do you do with it?” he asks. “Well Mum cuts it open, takes out the seeds (and feeds them to the chickens) then cuts off the skin and make soups and other things with the insides. It is very popular this time of the …

Beautiful Butterflies.

Butterflies are beautiful you know. I am watching them from just outside the front door, which Mum and Dad have thoughtfully put a shady porch on so I can sunbathe safely. Nearby is a gigantic bush with long purple flowers on it, it is called a buddleia, and it attracts lots of butterflies. Today it is playing host to some beautiful Swallowtails. Then Mum calls me for our walk around the lakes. I am preoccupied by a particularly interesting scent when suddenly I notice Mum has stopped walking. How do I know? Well, I’ll let you into a little secret. …

The Scarlet Darter Dragonfly

Today, walking around the lovely lakes nearby in the sunshine, Toby was happily sniffing around when something bright red caught my eye. There on a piece of reed was a bright red dragonfly.                                 I had never seen a red dragonfly before , so when we arrived home I looked it up and it is a Scarlet Darter. The one  above is a male because it is bright red, and as in most of nature, the males are brighter than the female because they use …

A Common Midwife Toad in the Shower.

The other night Mum and Dad heard a strange beeping sound in the yard, it sounded like something electrical was sending out an alarm, but it wasn’t… So what could it be? Well, Mum went out to investigate and under a tarpaulin she discovered the answer – it was a Common Midwife Toad! We love animals as you know here, therefore Mum wasn’t overly surprised when she went into the outside shower the other day and there it was, sitting on the shower mat! Why was she not surprised – well it was very hot weather, and it was cool and damp in …

The Trials and Tribulations of Kittens.

As you will know from my earlier posts, we have three kittens, Ramesses, Cleopatra and Nefertiti, they are quite big now as you can see from mums photo (this is Nefertiti), and we all enjoy playing together. The only problem with them is that they are taking over my life a bit. You see, they follow us everywhere, mum and I can no longer walk from home because they come too, and although it is very quiet here, mum is worried that they will stray too far, after all they are only eight months old…. When we go out in the car mum …

Well, it must be another year because I’ve just had my 6th birthday, I was born on the 26th December, my mum waited you see so that everyone could get over the excitement of Christmas and then marvel at her lovely puppies. Here is a picture of me on the front step of my mums home with my brother Spot.
