All About Hedgehogs

The other day we were out for a drive when mum pulled over and said “Look, there’s a baby hedgehog!” Sure enough, there was a hedgehog rooting through the leaves looking for food. Hedgehogs eat frogs, insects, worms, snails, mice, and grubs. Hedgehog is a strange name. Have you ever wondered why it is called that? Well, the name hedgehog started being used a long time ago in about 1450. The name came about because it can quite often be found rooting about under the ‘hedges’ and it has a nose like a pig, or hog – hence hedgehog. …

Beautiful Butterflies.

Butterflies are beautiful you know. I am watching them from just outside the front door, which Mum and Dad have thoughtfully put a shady porch on so I can sunbathe safely. Nearby is a gigantic bush with long purple flowers on it, it is called a buddleia, and it attracts lots of butterflies. Today it is playing host to some beautiful Swallowtails. Then Mum calls me for our walk around the lakes. I am preoccupied by a particularly interesting scent when suddenly I notice Mum has stopped walking. How do I know? Well, I’ll let you into a little secret. …

Dragonflies – Natures Aeroplanes

As I walk around the lakes this morning with my Mum, my attention is drawn to a very noisy frog which is sitting on a stone. “Good morning Mr. Frog,” I say, but it just ignores me. Then, suddenly, its tongue darts out and it catches a little fly, and quick as a flash it eats it – well I never, that’s disgusting, I think. Then, above me I hear a droning sound. Looking up, I expect to see the really old plane which Mum and Dad watch come over occasionally. However, instead I see the most ENORMOUS dragonfly. It …

The Scarlet Darter Dragonfly

Today, walking around the lovely lakes nearby in the sunshine, Toby was happily sniffing around when something bright red caught my eye. There on a piece of reed was a bright red dragonfly.                                 I had never seen a red dragonfly before , so when we arrived home I looked it up and it is a Scarlet Darter. The one  above is a male because it is bright red, and as in most of nature, the males are brighter than the female because they use …

A Common Midwife Toad in the Shower.

The other night Mum and Dad heard a strange beeping sound in the yard, it sounded like something electrical was sending out an alarm, but it wasn’t… So what could it be? Well, Mum went out to investigate and under a tarpaulin she discovered the answer – it was a Common Midwife Toad! We love animals as you know here, therefore Mum wasn’t overly surprised when she went into the outside shower the other day and there it was, sitting on the shower mat! Why was she not surprised – well it was very hot weather, and it was cool and damp in …

The lake at Chateau la Valliere

Everyone knows how us dogs love our walks. Well, if you live, or are going on holiday near to Chateau la Valliere in Department l’Indre et Loire in the Centre region (37) http://www.chateaulavalliere.com/index.php/culture-et-loisirs/calendrier-des-manifestations.html  which is just above Tours in the NW of France, there is a lovely walk around the lake there.     The lake has what is called an interior beach, as in a part of it is set out like a seaside sandy beach and in the summer holidays there is normally a lifeguard present at some times (there is a notice up). It is possible to take small …

Big Green Lizards!

Those of you who’ve read my book will know all about the Common Lizards or Geko’s which abound around here, and will have discovered some interesting facts about them. I have to tell you though, today, I watched Pepper the cat chasing something in the grass and I assumed it was a mouse. She’s a great mouser you see, well she is until she brings them into the house in the middle of the night, then mum is not impressed! I trotted over to her and she gave me a dirty look and made her hiss off sound, which she …
