The Scarlet Darter Dragonfly

Today, walking around the lovely lakes nearby in the sunshine, Toby was happily sniffing around when something bright red caught my eye. There on a piece of reed was a bright red dragonfly.

I had never seen a red dragonfly before , so when we arrived home I looked it up and it is a Scarlet Darter. The one  above is a male because it is bright red, and as in most of nature, the males are brighter than the female because they use their colouring to attract a mate.

Apparently it was in its ideal habitat of still water and is quite rare in the north-west of France and the UK.
